The Genesis Krypton 550 has a simple design that is similar with the well-established lightweight gaming mice Sporting a narrow design with a lot of perforations on the casing to lower the weight and add more depth to the look of the mouse.
The Krypton 550 is available in two colors, matte black or matte white, the unit in this review is the white variant. The white color looks better in my opinion as it highlights the shape of the mouse and the honeycomb pattern.
The dimensions of the mouse are: 128 x 68 x 42 mm.
The shape of the Krypton 550 is similar with both the SPC Gear Lix Plus and the Dream Machines DM6 Holey Duo. Two well known mice but part of different price ranges.
The Krypton 550 has a medium format foot print, with an asymmetrical top shape and sides.
The mouse casing is lowered on the right side. This is done to create a better platform for your index finger and palm. Unfortunately, this shape means that this mouse will be tricky to use by left-handed users.
The Krypton 550 is equipped with no less than three RGB zones. The scroll wheel at the front, the Genesis logo underneath the honeycomb on the rear and a small strip of fogged plastic on the sides of the mouse. All areas can be customized to work together via software.
The scroll wheel of the Krypton 550 has the classic two-part design. This design is done to not only highlight the RGB illumination but to add more depth to the design of the mouse. The contact surface is rubberized with a linear pattern for added grip.
Above the scroll wheel and on the center of the casing there are two buttons. While on many other mice these buttons would cycle through the DPI profiles, on the Krypton 550, only the front button cycles the DPI. The rear facing button will cycle through the RGB illumination patterns.
The sides of the Krypton 550 have a rubberized coating applied on them; this coating has a hexagonal pattern to match the rest of the mouse. The only difference on the sides of the mouse, apart from the angle, is the presence of the Forward and Backward buttons which are installed on the left side.
Speaking of the side buttons, these two buttons have good tactile feedback, although if pressed too hard they will get mushy.
By default, the buttons are configured as the “forward” and “back” but can be reconfigured through software.
The back of the mouse has the same honeycomb pattern as the rest of the casing. However, here is where the Genesis logo sits. Well, it’s actually below the honeycomb pattern which is an interesting design choice.
The underside of this mouse is simple in design, with more honeycomb patterns. The Teflon skates are wide and only two, one at the front and one at the back.
Near the optical sensor we have a simple switch that has three positions. This will toggle between the RGB modes of the LEDs.
The cable used with the Krypton 550 is long at 1.8m, however, it is flexible and well made. The sleeving is synthetic and not soft but flexible enough to work with it.
The USB connector is a standard USB 2.0 that is gold plated for increased reliability.
