A great advantage with the HAT5300 and the entire HAT series is that they are made specially to be used inside the Synology ecosystem and the Synology NAS products. While these hard drivers will work in a regular desktop, their main feature is the ease of installation and operation with a Synology NAS.
In addition, being a hard drive designed to work and integrate with the Synology NAS ecosystem means that the HDD can have its firmware updated with ease.

To test the HDD, the following software was used:

– ATTO Disk Benchmark,
– CrystalDiskMark 8,
– Windows File Copy.

In order to obtain a precise result each test was performed three times.

CrystalDiskMark 8 – Read

CrystalDiskMark 8 – Write

ATTO Disk Benchmark Read

ATTO Disk Benchmark Write

File Copy Test

Final thoughts

The Synology HAT5300 8TB is a great enterprise hard drive that not only delivers on its promise but is well built.
While there are other hard drives that will perform close or better at the same price, none of those HDDs will match the speed consistency of the HAT5300. In addition, the HAT5300 8TB is not loud at idle but will create some noise during full load and when seeking.

The performance of the HAT5300 is good, especially when looking at what other hard drives are delivering within the same price range. Underneath its new label and name, the Synology HAT5300 is made by Toshiba and is based on the Toshiba MG enterprise series. However, this HDD is not just a simple rebrand, as there have been plenty of additions on the firmware level to make it stand out performance wise.

Another great feature of the HAT5300 is the endurance, other enterprise hard drives have a Workload Rating of 300 TB Transferred per Year. However, the HAT5300 has a Workload Rating of 550 TB Transferred per Year, an impressive achievement within this price range.

My only concern with the HAT5300 and the entire HAT product line is to not become an exclusive product for Synology NAS systems. While the custom firmware and support is a great feature to have, a locked product is not that great.

In conclusion, the Synology HAT5300 8TB is a good choice if you want to either buy or build your own NAS that uses the Synology software. The hard drive will work out of the box in either a NAS or a regular desktop system. The HAT5300 shines inside a Synology NAS, because it was designed and configured for that environment. However, the price is not for everyone, especially these days where the market is going up price wise.
