Synology DS720+

Installation & Software

With both trays removed, you get easy access to the single DDR4 SODIMM RAM slot, while a lot of DDR4 RAM modules will work, Synology makes their own which is guaranteed to work.

The installation of the Hard Drives is done with ease, as the storage trays use a tool-less system. You simply insert the HDD into the tray and then clip the plastic beams into the sides of the tray. Unfortunately, these plastic trays do not have any insulation or vibration dampening materials. Thus, the vibration and the noise of the hard drives will be passed on into the NAS and outside.

Software

The Synology DS720+ uses the latest Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM). This piece of software is the backbone of the Synology NAS, you can think of it as the operating system of the NAS.

On the first boot, you must access “find.synology.com”, this is the web variant of the Synology automated NAS finder which will locate and connect with your NAS. Afterwards you will proceed with the installation of the DiskStation Manager on your NAS. With that completed you will have to create or log in into your Synology account and proceed with the installation.

Finally, you will gain access to the DiskStation Manager which allows you to control every aspect of your NAS. This includes installing additional apps to help with your daily usage of the NAS and creating your new Volume and Raid array.

After everything DSM related is done, you will be prompted to create your first volume. After this step is completed, a new window will appear. Here is where you will decide what or if you want a RAID array set up on your NAS. In my case, with two 8TB HAT Hard Drives, a RAID 1 setup is the best option as it will mirror the data from one HDD to the other. The drawback of RAID 1 is that you will lose half of your total available storage space, as you mirror one drive on the other.

After you are done with this, you are free to use your NAS and create a few folders in your storage space.

The Synology DiskStation Manager is the best feature of any Synology NAS, as it will fully automate most tasks including the installation of the NAS and its internal storage. Creating a Volume and a RAID array has cannot be easier than this as the DSM does it for you. In addition to the automation of the Synology OS, this software will handle all update and notification tasks alongside diagnostics of your drive and stored data.

For a complete beginner, the setting up and installation of the Synology DS720+ is easy, and should be done in under 10 minutes from start to finish. This includes installing the hard drives inside the NAS to installing the DSM, creating a volume and a new RAID array.
