The SGX 650 Gold is an SFX-L power supply, designed to work inside a small form factor system. This power supply has a fully modular design and uses a large fan for its active cooling. The design is centered around the before mentioned fan, with a fan grill that is integrated into the casing of the power supply. In fact, the casing of the SGX 650 Gold had to be redesigned to accommodate the bigger 120mm fan which his often used on larger PSUs.
The power supply has a weight of 2kg, a width of 125mm, a height of 63.5mm and a depth of 125mm.
The SGX 650 Gold is in fact a SFX-L power supply, which means that it is slightly longer. This is done as I’ve previously said, to accommodate for the larger fan. Other changes had to be made as well. The casing has just two parts, the fan grill, and the casing.
The sides of the SGX 650 Gold follow the same design as the front. With large rectangular cutouts which have their corners rounded off. These not only maintain the same look of the power supply but do provide a good way for the air to enter and escape the enclosure.
Other design elements present on the sides are the Seasonic and Focus Plus logos. These are painted directly to the metal surface and have a good quality to them.
The back of the power supply has the standard layout used by other Seasonic units. Cutouts in the shape of a honeycomb pattern which are the main exhaust port of the power supply. Other items located here are the AC power socket and the On/OFF switch of the unit.
The front side of the power supply has the modular slots for the cables, a total of 8 slots. Fortunately, these are clearly labeled and marked so no mistakes can be made when connecting the cables.
The top of the SGX 650 Gold has the standard label which offers the important technical specifications of the unit.
The cables of the power supply are all black and flat to ease the wire management process.
The fan used on the SGX 650 Gold is made by Globe Fan, fortunately, and has the model number: S1201512HB. This fan is a slim 120mm model that has a width of 15mm. The fan uses a Fluid Bearing system and has a maximum speed of 2200 RPM, although these technical specifications might vary based on the PSU model. The specs vary because each power supply has different requirements of airflow and static pressure based on the internal components.
The fan is connected to the PCB with a 2-Pin connector, which makes it removable and easier to service.
The SGX 650 Gold uses a modified Seasonic Focus platform. What modifications were done to the internal layout were done to not only make everything fit inside a SFX-L power supply but also to maintain the level of performance that is expected Seasonic.
The passive cooling of the internal components is done by just two solid metal heatsinks.
The filtering starts at the back of the power supply, with four Y type capacitors and two X type capacitors, alongside a secondary PCB attached to the back of the unit.
The APFC section uses a single primary capacitor manufactured by Nippon Chemi-Con with the following specifications: 400V, 470uF. The maximum operating temperature of this capacitor is 105°C.
The polymer capacitors are made by Nippon Chemi-Con and Nichicon which makes the statement that this power supply uses only Japan made capacitors, true.
The standby power controller used on this unit is a EM 8569C. And you can barely see it under the other components.
