Testing

The following system was used to test the SSD
– Processor: Intel i9 9900K @ 5GHz
– Motherboard: ASRock Z390 Phantom Gaming X
– RAM: GOODRAM IRDM PRO 16GB DDR4-3600MHz
– GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 2070 Super Gaming X Trio
– SSD: Crucial MX500
– Mass Storage: GOODRAM IRDM PRO GEN.2 1TB
– CPU Cooler: SilverStone Permafrost PF240W-ARGB
– PSU: Seasonic Snow Silent 750W Platinum
– Case: Phanteks Enthoo Luxe White

To test the SSD, the following software was used:

– ATTO Disk Benchmark,
– CrystalDiskMark 8,
– Windows File Copy.

In order to obtain a precise result each test was performed three times.

CrystalDiskMark 8 – Read

CrystalDiskMark 8 – Write

ATTO Disk Benchmark Read

ATTO Disk Benchmark Write

Final thoughts

The Crucial x6 2TB is a good portable SSD that has a great build quality and a good design. The performance is also good, especially, when considering that the X6 is essentially a SATA SSD inside. While not as fast as the Crucial x8, the X6 still manages to hold its own next to other SATA based SSDs, which is admirable.

The real-world performance is good for the most part, with an average copy file speed of 200mb/s. Keep in mind that a file copy is in essence, a write speed test, thus it will be lower than the access speed, with is the read speed of the drive.

The Crucial X6 2TB uses a dynamic SLC cache which is very good for small packs of data being transferred. However, sustained writing speed for transfers is not as impressive, especially if you are looking at data packs which are over 80 to 100GB in size.

The design of this SSD is certainly good, with no flashy RGB LEDs anywhere to be seen, and a good shape that has smooth, rounded edges. This is important, as a rounded SSD will not cause any issues or damage if it touches other objects while being in a bag.

The issue of the Crucial X6 2TB stands with the price, at around 230 USD or EUR, this SSD is not cheap, and the competition is offering either cheaper SSDs or cheaper and faster SSDs but with a not so good design or this small for factor.

In conclusion, the Crucial X6 2TB is a good, small & portable SSD that has as minimalist design. The performance is good for the most part, but to get the most out of this SSD, sustained data transfer should be avoided.
