The Ion+ 660W has an interesting look, thanks to its split case design. In simple terms, the top of the power supply will detach with the fan as a single unit. The case of the Ion+ 660W has an all black matte finish, while the fan grill has a glossy texture.
The power supply has a weight of 1.61kg, a width of 150mm, a height of 86mm with a length of 150mm.
The sides of the power supply are Ion+ 660W are simple in design, with only the Fractal Design emblem painted on their surface. In addition, the line which appears on both sides is the separation point for the two parts of the power supply case.
The back of the power supply has the standard layout, with the AC slot and the Power switch installed on the left side. The main exhaust vent has a unique rectangle & square pattern stanched into the metal.
The front of the Ion+ 660W features a total of 11 slots for the modular cables. These have white highlights applied around each slot. In addition to the highlights, the designation of each slot and cable is written on upper side.
On the left side of the modular slots, there is the fan control system switch. This can toggle On or Off the semi-passive system of the fan. In essence, if the switch is On, then the power supply will run in semi-passive mode, while if the switch is OFF, the fan will follow the default fan curve.
The cables of the Ion+ 660W are black and flat. The ribbon style flat cables are preferred, as each cable requires less space. In addition, the flat cables can be stacked and tied together and thus, reduce the cable clutter.
The only cable that is not flat is the 24Pin cable. This cable is instead, covered by high quality sleeving.
The fan used with by the Ion+ 660W is manufactured by Fractal Design, and is the model Dynamic X2-GP14 with the specifications: 1400 RPM, 68.4 CFM, 18.9 dB, 140 x 140 x 25 mm.
This uses a Fluid Dynamic Bearing system and is part of the Dynamic X2 series, and is available as a separate product. However small changes have been made for usage inside a power supply. The cable used is shorter and the connector is proprietary to the power supply.
The Ion+ 660W uses a platform developed by the company High Power. This platform has been used with other power supplies, such as the Thermaltake Toughpower Grand RGB series. However, Fractal Design brought some changes to the platform, so better suit the Ion+ power supplies series.
The passive cooling is done by three metallic heatsinks which are also painted black to match with the rest of the power supply. The active cooling is provided by the Dynamic X2-GP14 fan.
The filtering starts behind the AC slot at the back of the power supply with a couple of X and Y capacitors. In addition, behind the AC slot, a small PCB is installed, here there is a single discharge capacitor, manufactured by Champion and with the model number: CMD02.
The APFC section uses two primary capacitors manufactured by Rubycon with the following specifications: 400v 390uF and with a maximum operating temperature of 105°C.
The MOSFETs present on this power supply are manufactured by Infineon and are the model: IPA60R120P.
The secondary PCB installed at the front of the power supply, next to the modular system has two smaller coils which are also paired with a couple of Nippon Chemi-con solid capacitors.
On the PCB surface, the Standby PWM Controller can be found. This controller is manufactured by Excelliance and has the model number: EM8569.
The main PWM controller of the power supply is the ANPEC APW7159C. This controller is responsible for all of the control, monitoring, and protecting functions of the important components.
The Ion+ 660W uses both Nippon Chemi-Con and Rubycon, solid and standard capacitors.
