Packaging and accessories

The power supply comes packaged in a multicolored cardboard box with a black background and white & yellow accents. The front side of the packaging is silver and reflective, in the middle there is printed the name of the product’s line while below there are a few features of the product such as: Power, Efficiency and Modularity. On the right side there are printed both the name and logo of the manufacturer on a yellow background.

Visual inspection

The HCP Platinum 850W model has a minimalist design, the paint is of high quality just like the build quality.

The front grill which covers the 135mm fan maintains the overall look of the Power Supply, the grill being matte black. In the middle of the grille there is the logo of the manufacturer.

On the back side the PSU uses a honeycomb-style grill, here we find both the the on/off switch and AC slot and the manufacturer’s logo.

On both sides there is a sticker with both the name and logo of the manufacturer, next to it there is the name of the PSU and its power.

The front side is occupied by the 13 connectors for the modular cables, on the right side we find the OC Link connector which allows two HCP Platinum power supply to be connected and work at the same time.

On the top of the Power Supply we have the label with the specifications of the PSU.

The cables of the Power Supply are completely black and covered in sleeving almost to the end or nearly to the connector.

The fan used is provided by Delta Electronics, model AFB1312M specifications: 12V, 0.38A, 135 mm. Also the fan is connected to the PCB using a 2-pin Molex connector.

The electronic in the case of this power supply is manufactured by Delta Electronics, the OEM of the High Current Pro series is also Delta Electronics. The passive cooling of the electronics is ensured by four all black metallic heatsinks.

Behind the AC receptacle we find 2 Y capacitors and one X capacitor.

In the APFC section we find installed two capacitors manufactured by Rubycon with the following spec: 390μF/450V, next to it we have a filtering coil which is covered on the sides with silicone to prevent vibrations.

Behind the two main capacitors, mounted on a vertical PCB there is the PFC (Power Factor Correction/Controller) CM6502S manufactured by Champion.

The PWM standby controller is positioned next to the main capacitors, model TNY280PG.

Responsible for the Power Supply’s protections there is the supervisor IC model: DWA103N, it is placed on a vertical PCB located on the lower side of the Power Supply next to its connectors.

The capacitors used in the HCP Platinum are manufactured by Rubycon, the electrolytic capacitors are manufactured by Nippon Chemi-Con.

Testing

The following system was used to test the Power Supply:
–    Processor: Intel i5 4690K @ 4.5 GHz
–    Motherboard: MSI Z97 Gaming 9 ACK
–    RAM: 8GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical
–    GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 970 Armor 2X
–    SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB
–    HDD: WD 1TB Blue / Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB
–    CPU Cooler: SilverStone Tundra TD02 with NoiseBlocker eLoop B12-PS
–    Display: AOC i2769VM
–    Case: Phanteks Enthoo Luxe White
–    OS: Windows 10 64-bit

The above system has a power consumption of approximately 495W when in full load and 67W when idle, in order to test the efficiency of the Power Supply, the power draw of the system was measured at the wall socket. Also, the voltages were measured on the +12v +5v and +3.3v using a multi-meter.
To load the system to its maximum the stability test of the AIDA64 Extreme (5.90.4200) was used with Intel Burn Test V2.
The Power Supply was tested with the system both idle and at maximum load.

For rail voltage tolerance levels, ATX (Power Supply Design Guide) specify that a 5% variable fluctuation is acceptable.

The noise level was measured at three different distances from the fans (10cm, 20cm, 30cm.) the noise was measured with a margin of error of ± 5 db.

Final thoughts

The High Current Pro Platinum 850W model is a power supply with an exceptional build quality, the Delta design being among the best, and the 80 PLUS Platinum certification reflects that. Also when we talk about the power supply’s electronics, we have details such as the isolation of some components of the PSU using silicone to reduce vibrations and prevent noises (coil whine), or the usage of Japanese capacitors made by Nippon Chemi-Con and Rubycon. The exterior build quality is excellent starting from the paint and moving to the connectors and fan.
Although the fan doesn’t stop when the power supply is at idle, it remains silent throughout the operation.
The cables are flexible enough to facilitate the installation process of the system, also they are entirely black and covered in high quality sleeving almost to the end or close to the connectors.
In conclusion, the Antec High Current Pro Platinum 850W power supply is ideal for users who want a Platinum certified power supply with a 7year warranty and numerous protections. The main characteristic of this product being the quality offered by both Delta Electronics and Antec.
