Visual inspection

The cooler uses a Single Tower design, it is made out of aluminum. The cooler has a height of only 130mm, being ideal for mATX type systems, also it has a weight of 415g. The Byakko model is accompanied by one 92mm fan from the Slip Stream line.

The heatsink uses 46 fins, these are made out of aluminum. In addition, they are perforated to increase cooling efficiency and facilitate the mounting of the 92mm fan.

The Byakko model features 3 heatpipes made out of Nickel-plated copper, each with a diameter of 6mm. These are arranged in a U shape to facilitate the heat dissipation, also these are skewed towards the back of the cooler to improve RAM memory compatibility.

Just like the Mugen 5 and Fuma models, the base of the cooler is made out of nickel-plated copper. The base is brushed to a mirror-like finish. The back side of it is shaped to fit with the mounting system of the cooler.

The top of the cooler is brushed to a reflective look. Here there are the ends of the heatpipes and in the center there is the Scythe logo embossed.

The included 92mm fan of the cooler is part of the Slip Stream series, it is model SY9225SL12H-CSP and has a minimum speed of 300RPM and maximum of 2300RPM. In addition, this model features PWM.
The cable of the fan is exposed, it uses a 4 Pin Molex Connector.

Testing

The following system was used to test the cooler:
–    Processor: Intel i5 4690K @ 3.9 GHz and overclocked to 4.5 GHz
–    Motherboard: MSI Z97 Gaming 9 ACK
–    RAM: Crucial Ballistix Tactical 8GB DDR3 @ 2133MHz
–    GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 970 Armor 2X 4G
–    SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB
–    HDD: Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB
–    PSU: Antec Edge 550W Gold
–    Display: AOC i2769VM
–    Case: Phanteks Enthoo Luxe White
–    Thermal compound: Arctic Cooling MX-4

Software used for testing the cooler:
–    AIDA64 Extreme Version: 5.90.4200 (3/27/2017)
–    Intel Burn Test v2.54
–    Prime95 28.5

The cooler was tested with the CPU at the default turbo frequency of 3.9 GHz and overclocked to 4.5 GHz with a core voltage of 1.187 V.
Also, the included fans have been used at their maximum speed.
The room temperature was approximately 26°C (78°F), with 2°C margin of error.
The idle test consists of the CPU sitting idle at the desktop for 30 minutes, the temperature was measured at the end of the test.
The settings of the software used are the following:

Intel Burn Test v2.54 – Stress level: Maximum
Prime95 28.5 – small FFT
AIDA64 Extreme Version – Temperature monitoring.
Each test was conducted for 40 minutes.

The test results are as follows:

Idle

Full Load

The noise level was measured at three different distances from the fans (10cm, 20cm, 30cm.) the noise was measured with a margin of error of ± 5 db.

The cooler does not cover the RAM slots due to its skewed shape, thus being compatible with all types of memory modules and cooling heatsinks.

Final thoughts

The Scythe Byakko cooler offers a good performance in regards with the size of the heatsink and 92mm fan, also the build quality is very good despite the competitive price.
The included 92mm Slip Stream fan is silent even when used at its maximum speed, offering an adequate air flow for the side of the heatsink.
The installation process is done with ease due to the clamp based mounting system and the easy to read manual. In the future, the mounting system can be improved with the addition of a backplate, thus offering a firmer mounting.
In conclusion, the Byakko model is an efficient cooler with a good performance and excellent compatibility with all types of RAM memory, due to its shape and size.
The price of the cooler is fair, when keeping in mind its performance, both when talking about temperatures and generated noise. In addition, the build quality and the used materials are very good.
