Testing

The following system was used to test the SSD
– Processor: Intel i9 9900K @ 5GHz
– Motherboard: ASRock Z390 Phantom Gaming X
– RAM: GOODRAM IRDM PRO 16GB DDR4-3600MHz
– GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 2070 Super Gaming X Trio
– SSD: Crucial MX500
– Mass Storage: GOODRAM IRDM PRO GEN.2 1TB
– CPU Cooler: SilverStone Permafrost PF240W-ARGB
– PSU: Seasonic Snow Silent 750W Platinum
– Case: be quiet! Silent Base 802 White

To test the SSD, the following software was used:

– ATTO Disk Benchmark,
– CrystalDiskMark 8,
– Shadow of the Tomb Raider;
– Windows File Copy.

In order to obtain a precise result each test was performed three times.

CrystalDiskMark 8 – Read

CrystalDiskMark 8 – Write

ATTO Disk Benchmark Read

ATTO Disk Benchmark Write

Shadow of the Tomb Raider – Level Loading

Final thoughts

The Sabrent Rocket 1TB is a great M.2 SSD that delivers a good all-around performance and can handle its temperature if not pushed to its limits.

The performance is great, especially when compared to other more expensive SSDs. The SSD can sustain 1GB/s of file transfers and writing tasks up until the cash of the drive is filled. Afterwards, the speed drops to around 500mb/s until the task is completed. This is typical behavior with a drive that uses a pseudo-SLC cache. Speaking of the cache, while it does work as intended, the cache used on the Sabrent Rocket 1TB is very small, under 20GB which can create issues when large file transfers are performed.

The thermal performance is good for what is essentially, an SSD that has no heatsink included. The label applied on the front of the SSD does help with cooling, as its underside is made from solid copper. If low to medium writing tasks are performed, the SSD will never reach its thermal throttle point. However, if large file transfers are performed then the SSD will eventually hit its thermal throttle point.

The Sabrent Rocket 1TB is available with a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty if you get it registered on the manufacturer’s website. However, the usage of good components will ensure that a failure of this SSD will not happen.

The price of 130 USD or EUR for the Sabrent Rocket 1TB is great, as it places the Rocket 1TB at a 13 US dollar per GB rating.

In conclusion, the Sabrent Rocket 1TB is a good SSD that is available for a good price. The performance is great both in synthetic benchmarks and in daily usage. The temperature is kept in check and below the thermal throttle point.
