Testing
The DreamKey uses a plastic made two-part case and a solid metal plate underneath. The before mentioned plate is used to not only hold the switches and the PCB in place but also to increase the structural rigidity of the keyboard.
The disassembly process is simple; however, I was unable to completely remove the back plastic case of the keyboard. More than likely, this is due a hidden screw or clip or both. Even so, the disassembly process reveals that the DreamKey is well built, with good quality screws and good plastic plus a metal plate holding everything secure.
The keyboard has a good RGB system, however, unlike other RGB keyboards, the symbols and numbers of the keys are not illuminated by the LEDs. This is because the DreamKey has a different location for the symbols on the keycaps, on the side, instead of on the top.
The quality of the keycaps is very good, because they are made from PBT which is better overall and will last a long time.
The Num lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock indicators are illuminated by single white LEDs. These are simple in design and very bright.
The DreamKey does not have dedicated macro or media keys, instead, everything is done within the standard keys. However, one drawback with this keyboard is that the additional functions are not labeled on the keys.
The software used by the DreamKey is simple in design and light on your system. However, it is not as intuitive as it could have been, as it uses sub menus to access all the functions of the keyboard. This software will control the macro functionality of the keyboard, the RGB system and the additional functions, such as macro shortcuts, Windows key disable and so on.
Final thoughts
The Dream Machines DreamKey is a great keyboard that is priced under the competition while offering a great experience for both gaming and professional usage. With a price of 80 US dollars this keyboard is one of the best for those that want a good gaming keyboard that does not have the “gaming” look that is present on a lot of other keyboards.
The build quality is great, the plastic casing is made with solid plastic and the PCB and swathes are held in place by a solid metal made plate.
The layout of the keyboard is good as is the standard qwerty layout, however, the design of the keycaps will take some time getting used to, especially for people that have never used such keycaps. It’s not bad by any means, it’s just different and requires time to learn and adapt to it, so keep that in mind before you make your purchase.
The RGB illumination is good yet different, as the keycaps are not illuminated from underneath but from the sides. This is due to the way the symbols and letters are placed on the side and not the top of the keycap.
The DreamKey has two drawbacks, first, it should have had a wrist rest included, especially at this price point. Second, the retractable feet on the underside are good but are tricky to get out of their slots.
In conclusion, the Dream Machines DreamKey is a great keyboard that will work in both a gaming and a professional environment. The build quality is great and the RGB illumination is done with taste. For the asked price, the DreamKey is a great choice thanks to its mechanical switches, the build quality, and the unique keycap design.
