Crucial Ballistix MAX RGB DDR4-4400MHz CL19 32GB

Visual inspection

The Ballistix Gaming MAX RGB is nearly identical in design with the regular Ballistix Gaming MAX series of RAM kits. The main difference between the two is the RGB LEDs integrated at the top of each RAM module. The heatsink used on this model has a matte black finish applied evenly on all sides. In addition, the graphics are kept to a minimum, as most of the design is focused on the RGB components.

The kit featured in this review has the model number: BLM2K16G44C19U4BL and is running at a frequency of 4400MHz from the factory. This kit also has a total capacity of 32GB, and will run in Dual Channel mode.

The design of the RAM modules is elegant, with simple shapes present on the sides of the heatsink. The only graphics present are in the shape of the Ballistix logo, and these are placed on the center of the RAM stick.

The RAM module has a total height of approximately 38.5mm, while its weight sits at around 43 grams. One of the advantages of the Ballistix Max RGB is the low profile heatsink design, which offers an increased compatibility with bigger air CPU coolers.

The top of the heatsink is covered by a plastic made diffuser that has as its main purpose the even dispersion of light and color generated by the RGB LEDs. The good thing about this diffuser can be removed, by first removing the two plastic studs located on the upper corners of the RAM module. With the top diffuser removed, the height of the RAM module is reduced from 38.5mm to 36mm.

The paper label which contains the technical information of the RAM module is placed on the center of the heatsink. This paper label has an inverted design to better match the matte black finish of the heatsink. The label presents the model number, timings, capacity and voltage.

The heatsink removal process is simple, as both sides of the heatsink are attached to the PCB by self-adhesive thermal pads. As always, before removal, it is recommended that the sides of the heatsink are slightly warm so that the adhesive is easier to remove.

The Ballistix MAX RGB has a single side PCB design, which means that the memory chips are installed on one side of the PCB. The memory chips used with this RAM kit have the model number: C9BLJ. This particular model number is used on Micron B-Die chips which are known for achieving a higher frequency.

On the top of the PCB, and under the half-domed LEDs, there is a small chip. This is in fact a micro controller for the RGB LEDs of the RAM module. This controller is manufactured by ENE Technology, and has the model number: 6K5830UA.

    1. Indeed, and also, it is heavily reliant on the memory controller on the CPU and also, on the Bios of the motherboard.
