Features:

Asymmetric design for maximum memory compatibility: RAM modules with large passive heatsinks are no problem for the Mugen 5. Its heatpipes are slightly sloped backwards so that the radiator is not centered above the baseplate, but slightly offset. This asymmetrical design allows unrestricted access to the memory slots.
Kaze Flex 120 PWM Fan: The Mugen 5 is equipped with a PWM fan from the newly developed Kaze Flex series. It operates in a range from 300 to 1.200 RPM. The self-contained liquid bearing (Sealed Precision FDB) reduces friction and wear to a minimum, which results in an average lifespan of 120.000 hours. Rubberized pads have a decoupling effect and prevent the transfer of vibrations.
H.P.M.S. II (Hyper Precision Mounting System II): The second generation of the Hyper Precision Mounting System was designed with several small improvements benefiting the user friendliness. The already pre-assembled mounting bar makes installation much simpler, while spring-loaded screws prevent uneven pressure distribution. The Mugen 5 package also includes an extra-long screwdriver for easy mounting.
Dual Fan Mount Structure: Like its predecessors, the Mugen 5 was designed to mount a second fan (not included). This leads to an increased cooling performance by making use of the push / pull principle. A second set of fan-clips is included.

Visual inspection

The cooler has a single tower design with a asymmetric shape for a better memory compatibility. The main materials used in its construction are nickel plated copper and aluminum, offering a good performance to weight ratio, the cooler weights 890g. The cooler is accompanied by one 120mm Kaze Flex fan.

The heatsink uses 40 fins each, these are made out of aluminum. The corners are shaped to allow for a better mounting of the fan.

The Mugen 5 model uses 6 heatpipes made out of Nickel-plated copper, each with a diameter of 6mm. These are arranged in a U shape to facilitate the heat dissipation, also these maintain the asymmetric shape of the heatsink.

The base of the cooler is made out of nickel-plated copper. The base is brushed to a mirror-like finish.

The top of the cooler is brushed to a reflective look. Here we have the caps of the heatpipes while in the middle there is engraved the Scythe logo.

The screws of the mounting system can be accessed through the spaces at the top of the cooler using the included screwdriver.

The included fan is part of the Kaze Flex series, model SS1225FD12M-CHP, it has a minimum speed of 300 RPM and a maximum speed of 1200 RPM, also it features PWM.
The cable of the fan is covered entirely in black sleeving, also it uses a 4-Pin Molex connector

Testing

The following system was used to test the cooler:
–    Processor: Intel i5 4690K @ 3.9 GHz and overclocked to 4.5 GHz
–    Motherboard: MSI Z97 Gaming 9 ACK
–    RAM: Crucial Ballistix Tactical 8GB DDR3 @ 2133MHz
–    GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 970 Armor 2X 4G
–    SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB
–    HDD: Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB
–    PSU: Antec Edge 550W Gold
–    Display: AOC i2769VM
–    Case: Phanteks Enthoo Luxe White
–    Thermal compound: Arctic Cooling MX-4

Software used for testing the cooler:
–    AIDA64 Extreme Version: 5.80.4000 (Oct 25, 2016)
–    Intel Burn Test v2.54
–    Prime95 28.5

The cooler was tested with the CPU at the default turbo frequency of 3.9 GHz and overclocked to 4.5 GHz with a core voltage of 1.187 V.
Also the included fans have been used at their maximum speed.
The room temperature was approximately 26°C (78°F), with 1°C margin of error.
The idle test consists of the CPU sitting idle at the desktop for 30 minutes, the temperature was measured at the end of the test.
The settings of the software used are the following:
Intel Burn Test v2.54 – Stress level: Maximum
Prime95 28.5 – small FFT
AIDA64 Extreme Version – Temperature monitoring.
Each test was conducted for 40 minutes.

The test results are as follows:

Idle

Full Load

The noise level was measured at three different distances from the fans (10cm, 20cm, 30cm.) the noise was measured with a margin of error of ± 5 db.

Final thoughts

The Mugen 5 cooler brings several changes in the design compared to the previous Mugen coolers. The asymmetric shape allows the use of any model of RAM, the side of the heatsinks being no problem.

The included fan is part of the new line Kaze Flex, it is silent and features rubberized corners for vibration dampening, also the life span of the fan has been increased to 120.000 hours.
The build quality is very good and the mounting system has been improved from the previous models, the size and shape of the heatsink facilitates the mounting of the cooler.
The Mugen 5 model is compatible with all the relevant sockets including the new AMD AM4 socket, Scythe offers the mounting kit for AM4, it is available only by completing this request form: http://www.scythe-eu.com/en/support/request.html
Compared to other coolers from the same price segment, the Mugen 5 is much more silent and the asymmetric format makes it a good choice for small systems.
