Noctua NH-U9S

Visual inspection

The Noctua NH-U9S is identical in shape and specifications with the regular NH-U9S variant. The only change is the matte coating applied on every component of the cooler, except the contact surface of the baseplate.

The dimensions of the heatsink without the fan installed are (H)125mm x (W)95mm x (D)68mm.


The heatsink has a single tower design, and a slight offset towards the back. This offset is used to move the heatsink and the front fan away from the RAM slots of the motherboard. In addition, the heatsink uses approximately 45 aluminum cooling fins.

The total weight of the heatsink with the fan installed is 618g.


The NH-U9S uses a total of five heatpipes made out of copper. Each heatpipe has the standard 6mm outer diameter and they are arranged in a U shape to facilitate the heat transfer. The surface of the heatpipes is soldered directly to the underside of the baseplate of the cooler and the cooling fins. This method of contact between surfaces is the best for both heat transfer and durability.


The endings of the heatpipes are exposed at the top of the cooler. While other manufacturers would either leave these endings exposed or cover them, Noctua decided to machine them to be symmetrical. This will not affect the cooling performance in any way, however it does add more depth to the design of the cooler.


The baseplate of the NH-U9S is made from nickel-plated copper. The base body is covered by the same all black matte coating as the rest of the heatsink. The contact surface of the baseplate has a mirror like reflection, and also has subtle circular marks left from the manufacturing process.


The heatsink has approximately 45 aluminum cooling fins, which are shaped not only to channel the airflow through the heatsink, but to facilitate the installation process. At the top of the heatsink, there is a hole which allows for easy access of a phillips screw driver down to the mounting bar. In addition, the back side of the heatsink is shaped to again, facilitate easy access to the spring-loaded mounting screws.


The NH-U9S uses a single 92mm fan which is also part of the series. The fan used is the Noctua NF-A9 PWM, which has the standard dimensions: 92 x 92 x 25mm.
The NH-U9S uses the SSO2 bearing system and has the finish applied on all its components. The fan has a minimum rotational speed of 400RPM and a maximum speed of 2000RPM. With the help of the included low noise adapter, the maximum speed can be reduced to 1550 RPM.


The cable of the fan is covered by high quality sleeving and the connector used for power is a standard 4 Pin PWM.
