Noctua NH-L12 Ghost S1 Edition

Visual inspection

The Noctua NH-L12 Ghost S1 Edition has a simple design; it is designed to work with small form factory motherboards and enclosures. The Ghost S1 name is a reference to the Ghost S1 enclosure manufactured by Louqe, the company that Noctua partnered with to create this cooler. The NH-L12 Ghost S1 uses four heatpipes arranged in a C shape, and an aluminum made heatsink, with a single 92mm fan.
The dimensions of the heatsink are: (H)66mm x (W)128mm x (D)150mm. The cooler and the fan have a combined weight of 500g.

The heatsink has a high fin density design, and uses approximately 60 aluminum made cooling fins. This is required as the cooler uses just a single 92mm fan and must allow for good clearance around the CPU socket area. Thus, a higher number of cooling fins is used to increase the cooling performance. The aluminum cooling fins and the copper heatpipes are soldered, this method of contact provides optimal heat transfer.

The NH-L12 Ghost S1 has four heatpipes, each has the standard outer diamante of 6mm. The heatpipes are made from nickelplated copper and are arranged into a C shape. The heatpipes are soldered directly to the aluminum made cooling fins and to the back of the baseplate of the cooler.

The endings of the heatpipes are machined symmetrical, and are visible on the side of the heatsink. In the middle, the Noctua emblem is engraved into the surface of the top aluminum plate.

The base of the cooler is made from the same type of nickel-plated copper like the heatpipes. The surface of the base-plate is smooth and has a circular sun burst pattern etched into it. These marks are left from the manufacturing process; however, they are so smooth that the evenness of the thermal compound should not be affected.

The top of the heatsink features square spaces cut into the aluminum fins. This is done to allow for easy access of a screwdriver to the spring-loaded screws found on the lower plate of the mounting system.

The underside of the heatsink provides a good and stable base for the included fan to sit on, in the shape of two rubber strips, applied on the edges. This is done to prevent any vibrations from being passed on into the structure of the heatsink. In addition, a rubber base will prevent any unwanted scratches or movement of the fan on the fins.

The NH-L12 Ghost S1 has a single 92mm fan for the active cooling. The fan is a Noctua NF-B9 PWM model, and has the dimensions: 92 x 92 x 25mm. The fan has a minimum speed of 300 RPM and a maximum speed of 1600RPM. The top speed can be reduced to 1300RPM with the included low noise adapter.

The cable of the fan is covered by high quality sleeving and the connector used for power is a standard 4 Pin connector, which is also PWM compatible.
