4. Visual inspection
The Viper 4 model features a metallic heatsink which covers the memory on both sides. The heatsink has a linear design and it is composed of two segments, these use a black & red color scheme. Also the RAM features a black PCB.
On the front side of the heatsink there is the name of the memory line while the graphics background uses a linear design.
On the back side there is a label which contains the model, capacity & frequency of the Kit.
The upper heatsink is painted in pearl red, a type of paint often found in higher priced RAM.
The memory measures 41mm in height being compatible with the majority of the CPU coolers.
The upper radiator is designed to dissipate the heat from the memory chips. This heatsink is also detachable being mounted on the main heatsink with the help of two metallic screws.
Once the top heatsink is detached the memory is approximately 7mm shorter, thus being compatible with the majority of the air coolers.
The following system was used to test the memory kit:
– Processor: Intel i5 6600K @ 3.9 GHz
– Motherboard: MSI Z170A Gaming M7
– Graphics Card: MSI GeForce GTX 970 Armor 2X 4G
– SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB
– HDD: Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB
– PSU: Antec Edge 550W Gold
– CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken x61
– Display: AOC i2769VM
– Case: Fractal Design Define R5
– OS: Windows 7 64-bit Service Pack 1
The RAM was tested using the CPU at its turbo frequency of 3.9 GHz. The RAM was firstly tested using the standard X.M.P frequency while the second test was done with the memory at the maximum frequency reached in Overclock. Each test was done three times.
Software used for testing the cooler:
– CineBench R15
– Rise of the Tomb Raider
– SuperPi 1.55 Mod
– wPrime V2.10 1024M
– AIDA64 Extreme Version: 5.60.3700 (12/07/2015)
The test results are as follows:
Rise of the Tomb Raider
SuperPi 1.55 Mod
wPrime V2.10 1024M
6. Final thoughts
The main feature of the Viper 4 Series 8GB DDR4 2400MHz memory is the performance to price ratio. The heatsink is composed of two segments and provides adequate cooling for the memory, standing out with its unique look. Also, the possibility of reducing the memory’s height by detaching the top heatsink is a welcomed feature.
From an overclocking point of view this kit reached a frequency of 2907MHz with a voltage of 1.26. The performance gain in games being more than satisfactory.
In conclusion, the Patriot Viper 4 Series 8GB DDR4 2400MHz kit stands out through its performance and stability while being reasonably priced.
