Visual inspection

The Aegis model has a unique look due to its angular shapes on the front and top sides, the chassis also offering vast possibilities for water cooling. The paint used is glossy but fingerprint resistant.

The front of the chassis is divided into two sections. The base is made out of yellow plastic while the top part is covered by a glossy black film.

The front panel features a 240x320p display called Bitfenix ICON™, from the factory it displays the Bitfenix Logo. However it can be customized to display any JPEG picture.

The front panel airflow is achieved through the side metallic mesh, also these grills use a layer of dense textile mesh to prevent dust from entering the enclosure.

Behind the front panel we find installed a magnetic dust filter covering the entire front of the chassis. Behind the dust filter we find the fan mounting slots, the case front part of the case allows the user to install up to three 120mm fans or two 140mm fans.

On the back side of the case we have an included 120mm fan, below we have the 5 expansion slots and on the bottom we have the space for the PSU.

The side panels are simple, the main side panel has an acrylic window. The panel on the opposite side is simple.
Both side panels are held in place by using two thumb screws.

The inferior side of the case features a long magnetic dust filter which can be removed this filter covers the entire floor of the case, the chassis rests on four solid rubber & plastic feet.

The top side of the case uses the same angular design, the chassis being covered by a yellow plastic panel. Also the panel features a detachable metal mesh while on the front we find the I/O panel.

The I/O panle is composed of the following:
– 2x USB 3.0
– 2x Audio jacks
– 1x HDD LED
– 1x Power LED
– 1x Power Button
– 1x Reset Button
– 1x Fan Controller switch (with white LEDs)

The main feature of the Aegis model is the water-cooling optimized interior, offering numerous mounting options for radiators and different accessories such as the pump & reservoir.

The case can accommodate CPU coolers that are up to 170mm in height, graphic cards that are up to 380mm in length and power supplies that have a maximum length of 220mm. Also the wire management holes are covered with rubber grommets.

Behind the motherboard tray we find two 2.5″ spots for SSDs, one of them is placed in the lower right corner of the chassis, right next to the power supply while the other one is in the middle left side of the frame.
The motherboard tray also has numerous tie down points for wire management.

On the top the chassis can accommodate two 120mm or two 140mm fans. Here the user can mount radiators with different sizes: 280mm, 240mm, 140mm, 120mm.

The space intended for the power supply is covered by a metallic cover, the cover is attached using two screws.

The interior of the Aegis model is modular, the 2.5″ and 3.5” storage bays are removable being held in place by screws.
The two HDD 3.5” cages are placed on the floor and top part of the chassis, each can accommodate two 3.5” drives.

In the front of the chassis we find the dedicated 2.5” drive cage, this is fixed with screws on the top & front part of the chassis.

Testing

The following system was used to test the cooler:
– Processor: Intel® Celeron J1800 @ 2.41 Ghz
– Motherboard: Biostar J1800NH2
– RAM: Kingston 4GB DDR3 1600MHz CL11
– GPU: Intel HD Graphics
– SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB
– HDD: Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB
– PSU: In Win GreenMe 750W Bronze
– Display: AOC i2769VM

Wire management is easy even with a non-modular power supply due to the ample space being the motherboard tray, this space measures approximately 21mm.

Installing the storage devices is easy due to the tool-less clips that attach to the side.

The noise level was measured at three different distances from the fans (10cm, 20cm, 30cm.) the noise was measured with a margin of error of ± 5 db.

Final thoughts

The Bitfenix Aegis model stands out due to its modular construction & the water-cooling optimized interior. Also the case is available is 5 colours: Black, White, Red, Blue and Yellow, this combined with the BitFenix ICON™ display increases the possibilities of customization for the case.
The accessory bundle is rich, Bitfenix including metallic brackets for a reservoir and a pump.
In the future some improvements can be made: First of all the plastic use in the construction of the front and top panels must be reduced. Secondly, a single 120mm fan included is not enough to achieve a good factory cooling, but a minimum of two fans.
