2. Packaging and accessories

The motherboard is packaged in a box with a black background with white & silver accents.
On the front side of the box there is printed the model of the motherboard next to the name of the components used in its construction, “Super Alloy”. On the upper part there are printed both the name & logo of the manufacturer and a few features of the product.

4. Visual inspection

The E3V5 WS has a simple design being a motherboard oriented towards the industrial segment, the server one to be exact. The main feature of this motherboard is the use of the Intel C232 Chipset meant for the latest Intel’s Xeon processors, mainly the Skylake generation. Also the Skylake Xeons are not compatible with the consumer chipsets such as Z170, H170, B150, etc. these CPUs are exclusively compatible with the Intel C232 and C236.

 The motherboard features 3(three) 4-pin Molex PWM connectors, their position is the following:
Also the motherboard measures 305mm in height and has a width of 191mm.

The VRM cooling is ensured by a single metallic heatsink. In the upper left corner there is the 8-Pin CPU power connector.

Around the CPU socket there is applied on the PCB a linear silver design with an X shape which extends on the whole upper portion of the motherboard.

On the right side, there are the 4 DIMM slots that support DDR4 RAM with speeds up to DDR4 2133. The motherboard supports a maximum of 64GB.

The motherboard uses two PCIe 3.0 x16 (PCIE2: x16 mode; PCIE4: x4 mode) slots and three (3) PCIe 3.0 x1 slots.

The chipset heatsink uses a similar linear design as the VRM heatsink. It has reduced dimensions and it is being mounted on the PCB with the help of two plastic clips.

The audio system is isolated from the rest of the PCB, this is highlighted by a black line traced on the PCB. The capacitors used in the audio system are manufactured by Elna. Also the audio chip used by the audio system is manufactured by Realtek, and it is model ALC 892.

The Bios battery is positioned between the last PCIe 3.0 x16 and PCIe 3.0 x1 slots. Next to it there is the Bios chip and the jumpers for clearing the CMOS.

Next to the Bios battery there is placed the I/O chip made by Nuvoton, model: NCT5567D, its main function is to monitor the system and to control the fans connected to the motherboard.

The motherboard uses 6 (six) SATA 6 Gb/s ports. These are positioned on the lower side of the motherboard next to the USB connectors for the case’s I/O panel.

Bios

Like the current generation of motherboards, the bios offers two operating modes: the EZ mode, offers all the general information of the system, while the interface is designed to ease the bios configuration, even for inexperienced users. The EZ mode includes settings such as boot order, fan speed, RAID configuration or Bios update.

The Advanced mode uses a separate interface and includes numerous settings for memory and CPU, in the case of this review, a Skylake Xeon processor was used, thus the Overclocking settings are disabled.

 5. Testing

The following system was used to test the motherboard:

In order to test the Intel C232 chipset, an Intel Xeon CPU was used. This Processor has a base frequency of 3.5 GHz and a turbo frequency of 3.8 GHz. Also this processor features 4 cores and 8 threads with a TDP of 80W.
The RAM memory was used at its default frequency.

6. Final thoughts

The ASRock E3V5 WS is meant for the industrial segment, for servers, being equipped with Intel’s C232 chipset dedicated to Xeon processors. Also the motherboard offers support for ECC memory and Windows Server.
The Bios has an intuitive interface and the use of a detachable bios chip is a welcomed feature when a Dual-Bios configuration is not being used.
The motherboard uses quality components in its build, being included in the Supper Alloy category of boards. This is highlighted by the use of Elna capacitors in the audio system.
In conclusion, the E3V5 WS model addresses the industrial segment, using quality components and offering all the necessary options for running and configuring a server, being also compatible with the latest Intel Skylake Xeon processors.
The performance of the motherboard when paired with a Xeon processor is very good, the Xeon E3-1230 v5 model at its turbo frequency of 3.8GHz being faster in some cases than a Intel i5 6600K at 4.5GHz.
Also the price is more than reasonable considering the offered features of this model, in comparison with the prices of other motherboards in the industrial segment.
In the future, this motherboard can be improved by adding a M.2 slot and a few USB 3.1 Type-C ports.
